>>New Board Members Elected

On November 22, 2007, the Calgary Sport Council welcomed over forty-five representatives and friends from Calgary’s sport community to partake in our Annual General Meeting. After an exciting election process, Charlotte MacNaughton was re-elected to the Board for another term. The newly elected Board Members are: Scott Davis, Shelley Fried, Lew Hayes, and Melody Warman. All sharing a profound love for amateur sport and a devotion towards the progression of sport in Calgary the elected Board Members bring a wide-range of skills and experience to the Calgary Sport Council.  Their expertise will undoubtedly assist us in achieving our objectives.

The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) today unveiled its new Athlete Excellence Fund, an athlete support and reward program that will provide Canadian athletes with performance awards of up to $20,000 per Olympic medal. For complete article, click here.

>> CSC Appoints New Communications and Program Coordinator - November 8, 2007

The Calgary Sport Council is pleased to announce Nora O’Malley will fill the role of Communications and Program Coordinator. As a graduate of Mount Royal College’s Bachelor of Business and Entrepreneurship – Sport and Recreation, we are confident Nora will bring the expertise and professionalism required to assure the prosperity of the CSC. In addition to her academic background in Sport and Recreation, Nora has had the opportunity to work with several local non-profit sport organizations, including: the Canadian Sport Centre Calgary, KidSport Calgary, and the Alberta Alpine Ski Association. Nora has also been a competitive fencer for the past decade. Being a member of the National and Provincial Fencing Team, she has competed in many different Games and Championships from the grassroots to the international level. Nora is passionate about promoting and developing sport in Calgary. "I'm really looking forward to working with the Calgary Sport Council. Sport in Calgary is in a good place right now but I know we can make it better and I hope to be a significant contributor to this process."

>> Right to Play Skate – Calgary - November 11, 2007
This winter Right To Play will launch the second annual Harris Steel Right To Play Skate in partnership with Canadian NHL teams. With funds raised through participation, pledges and sponsorship, Calgarians can help bring the power of sport to more children. Proceeds will equally support local children through the Flames Foundation for Life and Right To Play's Sport for Development and Peace programming in the most disadvantaged areas of the world.  For details, click here.
>> Getting New Canadians Involved in Coaching
Ottawa - Two new studies, conducted concurrently for the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) by researchers from Queens' University and Dalhousie University, are expected to lead the way in effectively involving New Canadians in coaching and the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP), Canada's leading edge coach training and education program.  For details, click here.

The Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women in Sport (CAAWS) is seeking your input on powerful women who are influencing sport and physical activity in Canada to form the 2007 Most Influential Women List, which will be announced in January. >> ParticipACTION Launches Public Awareness Campaign
Along with its partners including the Government of Canada, ParticipACTION celebrated its return with the launch of a public awareness campaign aimed at inspiring Canadians to move more.  As the voice and champion of physical activity in Canada, ParticipACTION will also provide leadership and support to the physical activity, recreation and sport sectors so that all organizations and initiatives are united and coordinated, and it will work with its partners to advocate for policy change and action that supports physical activity in Canada.  For details, click here.

>> Federal Children's Fitness Tax Credit
Sport organizations should ensure their receipts meet the eligibility requirements for the Children's Fitness Tax Credit.  Information is available from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to help you determine whether the programs you provide should qualify for the  proposed tax credit and to help calculate eligible fees and issue receipts.  For details, click here.

>> Canada Sports Friendship Exchange Programs (CSFEP) 
The Canada Sports Friendship Exchange Programs (CSFEP) operates Reciprocal Cultural Exchanges for youth in Canada between the ages of 12 – 17 yrs old, through sport and non-sport groups. Their aims and goals are to promote friendship, better understanding and respect for one another’s language and culture.  They are now accepting applications for the 2007 – 2008 fiscal year. A questionnaire is now available for Albertans to provide input on how they would allocate funds in the next provincial budget. The responses will help provide context for the government as it sets the direction for the three-year fiscal plan outlined in Budget 2008

>> Team Alberta Finishes 2nd at the 2007 Western Canada Summer Games 
Congratulations to Team Alberta for finishing second in the overall medal standings at the Western Canada Summer Games.  Team Alberta won 61 Gold, 57 Silver and 68 Bronze for a total of 186 medals. For complete results, click here.
>> Eugene Melnyk Launches National ‘Patrons of Sport’ Campaign

Bell has launched an online portal connecting Canadians to our top athletes and the Olympic and Paralympic journey.  RealChampions.ca is an interactive online community where athletes tell personal stories of their Olympic and Paralympic journeys with self-published content including photos, videos, statistics and diaries from their travels around the world.

>> Playground to Podium - Canadian Model for Long-Term Athlete Development
This 7-stage model is a training, competition, and recovery program based on developmental age (the maturation level of an individual) rather than chronological age. It is athlete centred, coach driven, and administration, sport science, and sponsor supported. Athletes who progress through LTAD experience training and competition in programs that consider their biological and training ages in creating periodized plans specific to their development needs. The 2007 Provincial Budget released on April 19, 2007 will have an impact on Sport and Recreation in Calgary.  Although there is no capital investment planned in 2007-08 specifically for Sport and Recreation funding will be available to the sport community through various grant programs including a new Major Community Facilities Grant Program.  Read more..
