Mission
Through
strong partnerships, the Calgary Sport Council assists, supports, and influences
the growth of amateur sport in Calgary.
History
In 2002,
the Calgary Sport Council inaugural Board of Directors was formed as a result of
the work of a dedicated group of volunteers. The formalization of the Calgary
Sport Council was the first step toward bringing sport organizations together in
an effort to discuss issues and opportunities to enhance the delivery and
development of amateur sport in Calgary.
Recognizing the implications of Calgary’s rapid growth on the sport community,
the Calgary Sport Council initiated the formation of the Civic Sport Policy.
Developed by the Calgary Sport Council in partnership with the City of Calgary
and the Calgary Sport Tourism Authority, the Civic Sport Policy will guide the
development of sport in the city. In 2005, City Council approved the Civic Sport
Policy, the first of its kind in Canada.
In 2007, the Calgary
Sport Council, in partnership with the City of Calgary, launched the first-ever
Sport Needs and Preferences Study. This Study will create an accurate picture or
Calgary’s sport community and provide the base information for the development
of a Sport 10-year Strategic Plan.
