Draft sport strategies shared with citizens
Calgarians are invited to provide feedback on proposed key strategies aimed at helping our city’s amateur sport community become stronger and more sustainable for all athletes, young and old.
On Tuesday, May 6 and Wednesday, May 7, 2008, the Calgary Sport Council and City of Calgary Recreation will be sharing proposed strategies from a draft 10-Year Sport Strategic Plan with key stakeholders and interested citizens at two public information sessions (details below). The proposed key strategies will also be available Monday, May 5 on the Calgary Sport Council website at: www.calgarysportcouncil.ca.
In 2007, the Calgary Sport Council and The City of Calgary Recreation launched the Sport Needs and Preferences Study. This comprehensive, citywide study was a result of our city’s rapid growth and the growing needs of Calgary’s diverse range of amateur sport groups. In total, 202 local sport groups, 1,500 citizens, 12 secondary/post-secondary groups, 46 sport facility operators and 44 provincial/national sport organizations provided the results.
This week, the proposed key strategies are being reviewed by five focus groups consisting of key stakeholders from Calgary’s amateur sport community. After feedback and input is gathered from these focus groups, the key strategies will be revised and presented to stakeholders and interested citizens.
The 10-Year Sport Strategic Plan will then be presented to Council’s Standing Policy Committee on Community & Protective Services on June 4, 2008.
The Calgary Sport Council is leading the 10-Year Sport Strategic Plan project, working collaboratively with The City of Calgary Recreation. As outlined in the Civic Sport Policy that was approved by City Council in 2005, the Calgary Sport Council serves as a representative authority and voice for amateur sport in Calgary.
Public Information Sessions The Calgary Sport Council and the City of Calgary will be hosting two open houses to present the major themes of the 10 Year Strategic Plan.
